Combining the secrets of Quebec's ancient Acadia with modern forensic technology, "Bones to Ashes" helps Brennan confront a mystery from her childhood.
Bones to Ashes is set in Montreal, where forensic anthropologist, Dr. Temperance (Tempe) Brennan, spends half of her work life. This is the tenth novel in the Dr. Brennan series, which is the basis for the popular TV series, "Bones." No sooner has Brennan returned after a month away then she is met with a variety of cases. One, in particular, intrigues her -- the skeleton of a young woman found in Quebec's Acadia region.
Dr. Brennan knows a little about the secretive people of Acadia. When she was a young girl, staying with relatives in North Carolina, her best friend was Evangeline, two years older and from the exotic French-Canadian world of New Brunswick. The two became inseparable, and when Evangeline and her younger sister, Obeline, disappeared suddenly, Tempe was devastated. Her eight-year-old attempts to find her friend were met with warnings from Evangeline's family not to search for her. All of these years later, could the unidentified skeleton possibly be the long, lost companion of her childhood.
As Dr. Brennan learns more about the old skeleton, she is flooded with memories from the past. Still, the more she investigates the situation where the bones where found, the more plausible it seems that they might just be Evangeline's. She enlists the aid of her younger sister, Harry, a Texas divorcee, to help her find the truth. The pair flies up to New Brunswick, but is only met with more secrets, lies, and even open hostility. Will it be possible to find the truth after all of this time?
Like the television show, "Bones," the Dr. Brennan series combines a likeable, non-nonsense character with an intriguing look at the work of a forensic anthropologist. Like a detective, Dr. Brennan uses the evidence found within old bones to lead to the truth. Bones to Ashes is an interesting case, mixed with just enough new insights to Dr. Brennan's character to keep regular readers loyal to the series.
Kathy Reichs, like Dr. Brennan, is a forensic anthropologist, who divides her time between Charlotte and Montreal. Her first novel, Deja Dead won the 1997 Ellis award for a first novel and hit the New York Times bestseller list. Bones to Ashes is her tenth novel. You can read more about Ms. Reichs on her website.
