Irish Tiger by Andrew Greeley

Another Nuala McGrail Mystery Novel

Mar 12, 2008 Sandy Mitchell

Just before St. Patrick's Day, Father Greeley offers readers another dose of the charming "Irish Tiger," Nuala Anne McGrail and her family.

Irish songstress and sometimes solver of mysteries (she's fey, you know), Nuala Anne McGrail is one of the most likeable characters in modern mystery fiction. Married to Dermot Coyne, an American poet and retired businessman (and her spear carrier), she lives in Chicago, surrounded by two Irish wolfhounds, four children, and a host of mostly Irish-American friends and admirers.

Nuala Anne McGrail

When she's not sharing her lyrical voice and charming personality with the crowds that pack her concerts and buy her CDs of Irish lullabies and folk songs, she's getting involved in one or another puzzling situation. Not that she goes looking for trouble, but people have a habit of bringing trouble to her.

John Patrick Donlan and Maria Angelica Connors

One such couple is John Patrick Donlan and his fiancee Maria Angelica Connors. In "Irish Tiger," this fifty-something couple are discovering that love is better the second time around, but Mr. Donlan's daughter's are having nothing to do with them. So vehement is the eldest daughter that she convinces the parish priest to refuse to marry them. The situation is quickly remedied and John and Maria are married, but the attacks against them escalate, even after the daughters come to realize that Maria is not the witch that they assumed her to be.

When the pranks turn to violence, the Donlan family calls on Nuala Anne and her formidable stock of resources. Even she can't stop John from ending up in the hospital, however. Will she be able to get to the source of the trouble before something even worse happens?

"Irish Tiger," combines a lively plot, including several twists and surprises, with Greeley's signature wholesomeness. Because it is obviously heartfelt, this voice stops short of being cloying and is, instead, the stuff that makes you smile, giggle, and gain a little hope for your own life. Father Greeley's style of homily, disguised as a mystery novel, should be required reading at the seminary.
