Mercy Street – Mariah StewartLast Breath Author’s Novel about Murder, Missing Teens
When two teens are found dead, and two more missing, one grandmother commissions a search to find out the truth.
Robert Magellan has his own problems. His wife and young baby boy went missing a year ago, when they went away for the weekend to attend a baby shower, and he’s been grieving ever since. So when the millionaire is approached by his cousin Father Kevin Burch to fund a private investigation into two missing and two murdered teens, he’s less than enthusiastic. His own efforts with PIs to find his wife and child were fruitless, and he’s hesitant to repeat the process. Burch, with whom he grow up like brothers, convinces him, and Magellan tells him to send him the bill. An Investigative Team FormsBurch meets with Chief of Police Joe Drabyak for recommendations of a private investigator and is led to Mallory Russo, a former cop and now author of true crime books. Surprised by the offer and intrigued by the case, she agrees to take part in the investigation. She is soon teamed up with Charlie Wanamaker, her replacement at the police department, to secretly investigate the murder and missing teens. After three weeks of no leads and no sign of either of the two missing teenagers, the city’s chief of police wonders if they, too, were victims. But with no leads on any suspects, the police end up concluding that one of these kids must have been the shooter. One of the teens’ grandmothers maintains her grandson’s innocence, and is behind the investigation into the case, which the authorities had long since let become cold. Leads are FollowedRusso and Wanamaker try to recreate the scene and follow every lead to aid in their investigation. Unfortunately, their success is limited – and they find themselves following a path that leads them to an old investigation that ends with a killer more cruel than either of them could have imagined. Mercy Street is a fast-paced and suspenseful read, and subplots keep the novel interesting. Readers learn more behind Wanamaker’s motivation to move from Philadelphia to the small town of Conroy, Pennsylvania, and why Russo left the police force.
