Halloween is a perfect setting for a murder mystery and many authors have taken advantage of the holiday.


Among the best Halloween-themed mystery novels are:

  • Halloween Party by Agatha Christie - Hercule Poirot assists Ariadne Oliver when a Halloween party for teens ends in a young girl being drown in the apple-bobbing barrel.
  • The Cat Who...Talked to Ghosts by Lilian Jackson Braun - This 10th in the "Cat Who" series finds Moose County decorated for Halloween and Qwilleran, Koko, and Yum-Yum digging into the "ghosts" of the small town's past.
  • Death of a Trickster by Kate Borden - This is the second of five cozy murder mysteries featuring Peggy Jane Turner, all centered around holidays. The action revolves around a New England town plagued by holiday pranks turned deadly.
  • Murder at Witches Bluff by Silver Ravenwolf - A Wiccan murder mystery set around Halloween. The protagonist, Siren McKay is a practicing witch and the book includes a wealthy of information on witchcraft interlaced with the mystery.
  • Halloween House by Ed Okonowicz - A Halloween mystery novel located in the Delaware basin of the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Halloween Murder by Shelley Freydort - The fourth in a series of mystery novels that features Lindy Graham Haggerty, this enjoyable Halloween novel finds Lindy planning a community Halloween party, when the cheerful plans turn to murder.
